Can gums recover from periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease can be treated, but technically it can't be “cured.” Even after a dentist helps you get rid of periodontal disease, there is a chance that it will come back if you don't practice good oral hygiene. Periodontal disease can be treated, but technically it can't be “cured.” Even after a dentist helps you get rid of periodontal disease, there is a chance that it will come back if you don't practice good oral hygiene. If the gums are damaged by, for example, periodontitis, the most serious form of gum disease, it is not possible for the receding gums to grow back. However, while gum shrinkage cannot be reversed, there are treatments that can help prevent the problem from getting worse. Healthy gums fit snugly around the visible part, or crown, of the teeth.

Gum recession occurs when the gums detach or recede, exposing the roots underneath. And while gum retraction is irreversible, some treatments can restore gum tissue around the teeth. Periodontitis (or periodontal disease) is an advanced form of gingivitis that requires more rigorous treatment than gingivitis.
